Louise Bourgeois’s (1911–2010) significance for the generations of artists that follow her can hardly be overstated. Her work is complex, radical, and sometimes frightening in its frank expression, and she gives form to some intense feelings and experiences. The exhibition Blue Is the Color of Your Eyes, whose title is taken from one of her works on view, features alongside Bourgeois, a number of internationally active contemporary artists.

A common thread running through the exhibition is a discussion of and challenge to established forms of sculptural and painterly expression. Taken together, these works, which span from the 1940s to the present, examine questions of materiality and abstraction. And the presentation of key works from Moderna Museet’s collection illuminates both spiritual and corporeal approaches to the creative process, as well as addressing social issues.

“This year, one of the most important artists of our time, Louise Bourgeois, is the focus for our presentation of works from the collection,” says Museum Director, and curator Iris Müller-Westermann. “This is a fantastic opportunity to present all of the museum’s important works by Bourgeois spanning four decades. This spring, the entire second floor will be filled with exciting exhibitions that invite visitors to explore and to be inspired.”

In addition to Louise Bourgeois, Blue Is the Color of Your Eyes includes works by artists Torsten Andersson, Nina Canell, Johanna Gustafsson Fürst, Sofia Hultén, Axel Lieber, Eva Löfdahl, Mette Prawitz, R.H. Quaytman, Bella Rune, Amy Sillman, and Stanley Whitney.
