Out of 26 interesting and qualified applicants from Denmark and abroad on the list, the board agreed to select the former director of the Bergen Museums Erlend Høyersten, as the new director of ARoS. It will be a fixed-term employment of five years starting from January 1 2014, with an option of further 3 years extension.

We are convinced that Erlend Høyersten can bring ARoS even further towards international recognition” says chairman of the board, Carsten Frode. The visions of AroS are indeed international but without compromising the local – and at today's press conference the questions to the new director and the board also did circulate around issues concerning the fact, that Erland Høyersten is a foreigner – about the choice of hiring a foreigner for the job and about general cultural affairs.
But the choice to hire a foreigner is random, Carsten Frode points out, as the emphasis through the recruitment process has been put on the art professional background as well as on management skills.
Out of the 26 applicants on the list, the majority were foreigners. ”This shows us, that AroS has become interesting also within an international context.” says Carsten Frode. Frode also points to the fact, that Erlend Høyersten is from Norway, which has a similar culture and beside that, it is required that the director of ARoS lives in Århus. Erlend Høyersten and his family will be moving to Århus within the near future.

Erlend Høyersten has a longer career as director at the Bergen Museeums and had his professional breakthrough already at the age of 31. He is of the opinion that art is important to many, but that it could be important to many more. A viewpoint shared by Carsten Frode and former director Jens Erik Sørensen, who agree, that art can be seen as succesful when it hits widely.

Erlend Høyersten is, beside fitting the profile as director of a big developing museum of art, also very good with kids, Carsten Frode mentions, which is also a focus at ARoS.

It has been interesting to follow the developments at ARoS in the past decade. It's amazing what has been achieved, both in terms of exhibition quality and number of visitors. The results are admirable and have led AroS to become widely credited anywhere in the world of art. I look forward to the exciting task of bringing things forward." Erlend Høyersten says.
