Heta Uma - Misaki Kawai @ V1 Gallery

How has it been to be in Copenhagen for almost 3 months?
I have visited Copenhagen several times, but always like, ten days, one week. This time we stayed 3 months, so we could absorb more of the city, make more friends and just, you know, be at the park with our daughter so it has been really nice to be here just to get the city to know more.

Borrowing a Christiania bike from our friends and seeing things around the city. The colors or the design or everything, just the whole Copenhagen life has been very helpful for me to think about what I make.

How has your stay in Copenhagen influenced your work?
I think the basic doesn’t change, like ideas and things, but I just have a little bit more spice. Just a little bit salt and pepper or colors and stuff, just adding to make it better. I like to work in daylight and the sun. The long daylight  has been very nice, I don't like to work under fluorescent light.

Can you say something about the title Romantic Melody?
I think life, just the daily life in general, has many romantic moments, which we might not think about so much. But I think each moment is very special and can be very romantic Maybe you can hear a sound or just a feeling - that kind of thing I just wanted to put on to the exhibition. I think that is why it was named this way.

The title comes in the end. I painted everything and just hmmmm… there is the title.

I think each moment is special. So we should enjoy each moment in our daily life. It is kind of a part of the message for this exhibition.

What is romance to you?
I think sometimes it is a little goofy, sometimes a little bit cheesy, sometimes it’s a little bit… it’s just like special moments. Maybe you can see it in my work. Romance. I didn't think too much about it.

Sometimes romantic is very funny in a way. It’s like a very fluffy cat with a glass of wine. Romance can be like comedy - if it makes sense?”

You work a lot with comedy?
Yes I think every person has their own idea about the romantic, but generally it’s similar. I think the romantic is kind of like love, just warm and happy.

You mentioned goofiness, which is also something you seem to work with
Just like, its cute or feels fun or feels good. I am from Japan, Osaka which is kind of a comedy town. So I think naturally I have some kind of a funny thing.

I paint someone with a blue face - she don't actually have a blue face, but I think it’s interesting to change the color.  In China they have a fake Disney Land. I don’t know if it is fake anymore, but Donald Duck has a blue face not white so it’s like really??? I think it’s that approach I have to color.

Yes, but it’s not all comedy… there is a balance
It is life. If we know about very sad moments, then we know about very happy moments. So it is important to have all kind of things. Not everything is dreamy and cute. We should appreciate everything.

Spontaneity and intuition is very important to your work?
Generally I know I can paint, so I always like to try new things. I think it is important for artists. It is of course good to have all types of artist, but for me it is important, that it is exciting and fresh.. That is the key. I don’t know - maybe some people can do the same painting for 20-30 years - for me it is different. It’s important for me to always be free and new.

The framework in this exhibition is kind of my experimental pieces. New ideas is coming from these, because I am just playing with it. I don’t have a sketch for it, I just like to see how everything goes. Not to know what is going to happen is good for me. When I go to the studio, I don’t know what I end up making. That is very important to me.

And your sculptures?
I start with drawing a shape in my sketchbook. But it’s not exactly the shape, it is kind of an idea or memory of what I sketch. I just start drawing… just moving my hands, just working.

You seem to be working a lot, all the time. How did you select the works for this exhibition?
This time it is everything I made. I came directly from Japan just me, my husband and my daughter and nothing else. We came here and started to get paint, canvas and materials. I was just starting from zero. Everything I made here is in the exhibition.

What is right and wrong within the art world?
Most things are not wrong but everything is different. The only thing that is wrong is to hurt someone. I think a pure heart and mind is important to make great art work. Technique is great too, but that is not the most important part. I think a sense and just feeling is the most important thing.

Thank you
