The gallerist is the artist. abc - art berlin contemporary

Installation art, work about space and context, is an important part of "the contemporary". When the white over lighted booth with its backstage storing room, its table with champagne, and its carpets is not available any more, the gallerist has to work within the rented space in another way. He has to get in conversation with the environement and come with solutions for interaction.

Gallerists at the abc art fair have shown an amazing, in fact heroic, capacity to present art on sale so well in such a difficult room, that you are not sure they want to sell at all. The gallerist have maybe become a kind of non-commercial contemporary artist. You get the feeling that the artistic experiment they are doing with the rented space is more important that selling. Art of that category seems to have enter a new experiment. Questions like: What is an art fair? What is a gallery? What is an art work on sale? and even maybe: What is art? come naturally in the visitor promenade. This is refreshing for artfairist, as questioning staged art event like an art fair is very important . Experimenting that an art fair can look differently from a car show is refreshing.

After many thoughts about context of the art in Kassel (like should the context of a city producing massively weapons be include in the art show itself), I came to think: How do one understand and spot art here, in a space where there is not the usual strong white lamps, white walls, or grey carpet corridors - not even Duchamp fingers saying "this is art " (in the form Thierry de Duve described in Resonances Du Ready Made). Marcel Duchamp showed us the "this is art" - a simple act to designated what is art - but how do one spot contemporary art, if one don't find the "this is art" codes anywhere?

What about an art fair where you don't get the possibility to tell what is the art and everything become contemporary art, even the wall of the booth. I acknowledge the existence of the curator-artist but now since abc - art berlin contemporary I experienced the gallerist-artist. Artists have to find new territories soon and renew their contemporary fast. Soon they will be told: we don't need you any more.

Watch out! Maybe art fairs will be important catalyst to accelerate the great change in art, maybe be responsable for the end of the contemporary.
