Hans Belting, Venice Biennale 2013 "an anthropology of images" as heart inspiration

Short informal  interview with Mr Hans Belting early November in Copenhagen by Biennalist Thierry Geoffroy / Colonel about the Venice Biennale concept. The curator Mr Massimiliano Gioni placed Mr Belting an anthropology of images work in the center of the next Venice Biennale thematic. We can start preparing… !

Sunday 4th November 2012 I had the chance to have a planed meeting with Hans Belting and Andrea Buddensieg in Copenhagen with the purpose of organizing our next Biennalist exhibition in Berlin (the previous one was at ZKM Museum Karlsruhe entitled the "Global contemporary" 2011).

The coincidence could not have been stronger as I was searching for the themes of the next Venice Biennale (2013) curated by Massimiliano Gioni, the official announcement came few days ago. Massimiliano Gioni choose as a title The Encyclopedic Palace and refer to one of Hans Beltings (numerous) books.

I had then the exclusive chance to ask Hans Belting a first comment, as Biennalist is highly interested in the Biennale theme, to start preparations. PS: this work will expand during the preparation process

From the Biennale concept announcement: (link to complete Venice Biennale concept announcement)

The exhibition will place at its heart "a reflection on the ways in which images have been used to organize knowledge and shape our experience of the world." Inspired by what scholar Hans Belting has called "an anthropology of images”, the Biennale Arte 2013 curated by Massimiliano Gioni will attempt "an inquiry in the realms of the imaginary and the functions of imagination.

What room is left for internal images - for dreams, hallucinations and visions - in an era besieged by external ones? And what is the point of creating an image of the world when the world itself has become increasingly like an image? How far does the domain of the imaginary extend, when people are still fighting in the name of images?"
