PRESSEMEDDELELSE

We Hate In Order to Survive is an exhibition that, on the one hand shows the nature of hatred; it's emotions, it's propaganda and its logic, and on the other hand tries to understand the underlying reasons for it. Wherein lies the fascination of a homogeneous nation; the need to abolish the pluralistic society? Is it possible to explain exclusion and hostility, and how it arises, from an artistic perspective? And is it possible to reach a plan of action, to actually change the world through art? How do artists think and work with these questions?

The exhibition's starting point springs from a need to make the current debate about xenophobia, hate crimes and fascism more rooted in our history. By inviting Scandinavian artists, we aim to present various comments on the current political situation, in Europe and in particular in Scandinavia. The exhibition deals with issues such as identification, belonging, nationalism, state, society, tourism and ideology.

Despite the fact that the title We Hate In Order to Survive refers to a fascist view point, we want to use the idea as a form for discussion where it is possible to question the "we"? Our hope is that the "we" through out the artistic expressions of the exhibition can be negotiated and understood from several perspectives. As a

result of this, the exhibition is more of a survey than it is a statement; who are "we", in opposition to "they"?

The exhibition is curated by Ditte Ejlerskov and Jens Henricson, initiated and produced by Woodpecker Projects. With support from Sveriges Konstföreningar (SE) and Inter Arts Center (SE) and Malmö Art Museum (SE).
