PRESSEMEDDELELSE

The Explorer, an exhibition by Jenny Nordquist and Louise Bøgelund Saugmann.  The exhibition comes as part of the Copenhagen Photo Festival 2013. It will  show two new photographic bodies of work entitled Distant land and He who knows, is a master of himself.

The show’s title The Explorer refers to the different perspectives, from where the work speaks of investigation, transiency and the very fragility and boundlessness of humanexistence. For both artists the camera becomes the medium to explore human nature, at the same time as it explores its own nature as a medium. In Distant Land the 19th century explorer looks at the surroundings in order to master nature and seize it. In He who knows, is a master of himself understanding the world today is looking at ones self, even when travelling to exotic places.

In Distant Land Nordquist works with found, hand-coloured magic lantern transparencies that document the ventures of travellers in the Alps in the late 19th century. The 100-year-old photograph’s fragility is made explicit by the process of decay. The dust, scratches, dissolving emulsion reminds us of the fragile medium of photography, subject to the same process of decay as the human body. The figure of the explorer is enduringly charged with romantic or symbolic connotations; he represents the progress, the new frontier, and the discovery.

He Who Knows, Is a Master of Himself consists of a number of photographs shot at Dhamma Giri – Vipassana International Academy, which is the main centre of Vipassana meditation, situated in India. Methodically inspired by Surrealist automatic writing as a tool to reach the unconscious, the series is photographed after 10 days of meditation undertaken in a state of complete silence. The photographs perform a balancing act between the sober registering of actual existing rooms on one hand and a poetic hinting at imaginary and spiritual forms of spatiality on the other.

Jenny Nordquist (b.1977) is a Swedish artist, who works with photography and sculpture. Her work address subject matters including nostalgia, existentialism and decay. In Distant Landshe works with found materials and her practice is akin to that of a curator and visual anthropologist. Nordquist has exhibited in Singapore, England, Finland, USA, Sweden, Belgium, The Netherlands, Norway and Denmark. She currently lives and works in Copenhagen.

Louise Bøgelund Saugmann (Dk, b. 1973) is a Danish artist, who works with photography. Her practice originates from an interest in spaces that represent imbalances and uneasiness in culture. It centers on visual spaces that aim to capture mental states, moods and presence. Louise has exhibited in England, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. She currently lives and works in Copenhagen.
