The End at the Beginning

Exhibition and Publication

Meaning embodied not by objects but acts, unfolds through narrative. An act as a process in time relies onexperience or ways of documentation to transfer meaning. Comprising an exhibition, live performance and apublication, The End at the Beginning weaves together these different elements to read and recruit eachother, following leads and links through footnotes, yet existing autonomously in their own logic. If an objectpresupposes an act, it carries meaning and performativity, similar to a word as either text or speech. Thespeech act, performing the utterance of a word in syllables or sequences of sounds, relies on the visitor'sprior knowledge and attention at that moment in time. In writing the very same word, it is notated inindividual signs, following phonetic or prescribed sign systems, for the reader to decode and interpret.

The artists in the exhibition employ different strategies to examine the constructed aspect of cultural meaningproduction. The project Hello (Epilogue series) by Dan Stockholm is based on extensive research andfieldwork into locating prehistoric flint tools. In applying these tools to create works of art, they instruct and shape actions, challenging their initial use or intention as well as re-inserting the tools into the circuitry ofcultural production. In Elise Eeraerts's work plan 2: octagonal prism - moving space, the work of art as anobject is considered in its material properties, not as a static object but as a performative act in itself. Aportable system that is carried to and assembled in chosen locations, stages temporary situations hosted by its shape and presence. The presentation of the work is acted out in various places in the city, existing in the exhibition in the form of documentation. Jeremias Holliger will present the performance Diagonal Lines, a Decision! in which he attempts to utter the act of producing a work of art, in words, elaborating his decision to only paint or draw diagonal lines. Linking speech and act, the attempt folds back onto itself, or himself, concealing the very act in the process.

The publication Gestural Objects brings together the works of various artists, including those participating in the exhibition. Edited by Laura McLardy, it forms the second issue in her publication series Points in Line. Extending from the first issue themed and titled Linear Movement, this second issue focuses on language as atool for deconstructing acts of movement - positions as points in a line of events, the grip of a Hand Catching Lead, an object enveloped by a hand instructing its gestures, indexes of positions mapped in angles.
