She Hears Music

Paula Muhr

05.03.2016 - 24.04.2016

Through her research-based artistic practice, Paula Muhr examines socio-cultural strategies of constructing sexuality, gender, desire and normality.

In her installation She Hears Music, Muhr focuses on the elusive phenomenon of hypnosis as a mental state characterized by a partial disintegration of one’s identity, loss of the willful self-control and emotional excess. In this dreamlike state, the connection to the external world can become destabilized and supplanted by hypnotically-suggested alterations in the perception of sight or sound and the response to pain.

Muhr’s source materials are transcripts from scientific experiments and her installation intentionally blurs the distinctions between suggestion and manipulation, autonomy and submission. It also explores the visceral power of the images, words and sounds typically used in a hypnotic induction.

Paula Muhr is a visual artist and researcher based in Berlin, Germany. She studied photography and comparative literature in Belgrade, Serbia, and at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig. Currently, she is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Art History and Visual Studies of the Humboldt University in Berlin. Muhr’s work will be presented for the first time in Sweden. Her work has been shown internationally, such as the Fotogalerie Wien, the Museum auf Abruf in Vienna, the GRASSI Museum in Leipzig, the Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes in Tenerife, the Centre national de l’audiovisuel in Luxembourg, the Triennale di Milano, the Musee d’Art moderne et d’Art contemporain, Liege, Belgium and the Shenzhen Fine Art Institute in China.
