RIMMING GLAZZIES OF MILK ON THE TABLES TURNING : SYMPHONY #1

Leyla Pillai

Kurator: Emilie Kjaer, Dyveke Bredsdorff

02.10.2018 - 30.10.2018

PRESSEMEDDELELSE

This October SHELL LIKE curators Amy Pettifer and Jennifer Boyd present a show by Leyla Pillai titled RIMMING GLAZZIES OF MILK ON THE TABLES TURNING : SYMPHONY #1 continuing their take-over of the programming of exhibiting artists at www.ilyd.nu.

RIMMING GLAZZIES OF MILK ON THE TABLES TURNING : SYMPHONY #1 sounds a splice-voiced, multi-registering female being emanating, in ecstatic conspiracy, from the depths of a dark lair come glistening womb. Visions emit and are received via the ‘GLAZZIES’ of the title - a re-purposed word from the Nadsat lingo of A Clockwork Orange, which stands for both nipples and eyes.

Its form is cyclical and possessing of hypnotic rhythm; the sinuous voice (underscored with heartbeat, gut gurgle and the bright hum of a finger as it rubs the rim of a glass) staging a reversal of dangerous patriarchal powers. Through this siren’s work they are knocked, gradually off their vile kilter - the sacred sound of glass harp and glossolalic voice emerging in an unstoppable lactic spill.

This work has been specially commissioned by SHELL LIKE to be premiered at ilyd.nu

Leyla Pillai is an artist, writer and researcher, currently producing and presenting Who’s That Girl?, a radio-art show spanning seven years in residence on NTS radio. Who’s That Girl? is a question in flux, explored monthly in all her myriad voices through spectral soul soundscapes, artists’ aural portraits and metaphoric spoken voyages. Past shows include specials on Cosey Fanni Tutti and Regine Fetet, Imaginary Girl and S/He Got The Blues in Her/e. Connecting the spaces between sound and visual culture; an abyssal of the arcane, recondite and subtextuals form the basis for presenting experimental and explorative documentary. This summer Pillai was part of the residency ULTIMATE FANTASIES at Guest Projects, London, and played at Tate Modern as part of Tate Lates. https://www.nts.live/shows/whos-that-girl

About SHELL LIKE

SHELL LIKE is a collaboration between writers Amy Pettifer and Jennifer Boyd, taking the form of listening events featuring both existing and newly commissioned audio work by UK and international artists and writers. These events comprise one-hour-long programmes, curated in response to a theme and to be experienced in the surrounds of an exhibition or conceived environment. SHELL LIKE creates a dedicated space for sound work and focuses on the importance of listening - particularly as a group - as a vital social and political act. Past SHELL LIKE events have taken place at Guest Projects and Artsadmin in London, and Sidney Cooper Gallery in Canterbury. Their fourth event will be at LUX, London in September 2018. SHELL LIKE have worked with artists and writers including Tai Shani, Heather Phillipson, Larry Achiampong, Caroline Bergvall, Diana Policarpo, Evan Ifekoya and Grace Schwindt.

From its beginning, SHELL LIKE has been concerned with how text might exist outside the bounds of conventional publishing. In response to ilyd’s foregrounding of early sound works by visual artists, SHELL LIKE will use their takeover to present a series of audio works by writers which, in many cases, are their first experiments with the medium. The programme, running from June - December 2018, will feature Amy Pettifer, Jennifer Boyd, Octavia Bright, Nisha Ramayya, Matilda Tjäder, Leyla Pillai and Alex Borkowski.

ilyd.nu is curated by Emilie Kjaer and Dyveke Bredsdorff.
