Recent Works - Lars Morell

Lars Morell

21.08.2015 - 19.09.2015

Lars Morell (1980) lives and works in Oslo. After graduating from the National Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo in 2005, Morell has exhibited on a national and international level presenting work in different group and solo exhibitions, for example at the Artissima Art Fair, Italy the Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Jeu De Paume, Paris; Jan Wentrup, Berlin; Perla Mode, Zurich; Centrum för Fotografi in Stockholm, as well as Fondation d'entreprise Ricard in Paris. In 2013 he received the Pollock-Krasner Foundation's Grant from New York.

Lars Morell´s practice has its roots in wide-ranging research, encompassing ancient scientific discoveries, cabinets of curiosities, pop music and magic shows. With references to late 19th century features and issues, Morell is interested in the point where the overt visual language of that time meets the analytical approach of todays contemporary art.

For his second solo exhibition Morell presents "Shadow Canvas" and "Silent Codes", respectively, recent paintings and bronze sculptures. In the dusty mauve paintings one catch´s a glimpse machinery, which was used to seduce the audience when magic and magic art had its heyday in the early 1900s. He has stylized the mystical and theatrical forms, composed them with unexpected gravity - and balance points and reproduces them as blurry silhouettes. The shapes in the dark patinated bronze figurines are cast over the same motifs and appear as empty imprint of what was once there.

Morells work is represented in important private collections in Norway, Germany, France, Denmark and in numerous public collections including Statoil Collection, Malmø Kunstmuseum and Sørlandets Kunstmuseum, Kristiansand.
