Prayer Book for a Drunk Noah

Russell Nachman

12.10.2013 - 11.11.2013

Artist Statement:

"And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent." - Genesis 9:21

Having fulfilled the task God had set before him, Noah-the last good man, got drunk and naked.

Palimpsest IV: Prayers for a Drunk Noah continues a meditation on the waning days of western metaphysics via the art historical trope of the harlequin, re-imagined as a Metal head. Corpse painted figures imbibe in a bacchanal of alcohol and religious euphoria. They are the Freudian Id, loosed and drunk on mis-appropriated spirituality.

Using structures of iconic, Christian painting and illuminated, prayer manuscripts the work creates a contrast of reverence and irreverence in order to express the desire for meaning faced with the fear that meaning has receded in the world.

It's the sacred and the profane, embracing the human comedy, neither proselytizing nor moralizing.
