Landscape Recomposed

Christina Malbek

23.08.2013 - 20.10.2013

Christina Malbek (1971) is a landscape painter in a hybrid culture. Her new paintings in Landscape Recomposed shimmer with light, foliage and uncontrolled growth where people and architecture, seem to, almost symbiotically, arise out of and unite in the complex circuit of nature.

Malbek´s special technique is developed by using airbrush paint, formerly with a spray gun, but today painted by hand as drops, spills and precise brush strokes, often in fluorescent and transparent colors.

As a kind of double exposure, she composes her images by overlapping the motives from her own photographs. This gives the perception of being situated in several places at the same moment. In a cross between figuration and abstraction the surface resembles a type of digital impressionism, thus challenging the viewer´s usual ideals of romantic landscape painting. The works become a comment to the perpetual reproduction of reality in contemporary society.

Over the last decade Malbek has established herself as one of the most compelling innovators of the genre. Her practice is rooted in the Nordic romantic landscape tradition and yet, is also related to the Italian futurists, Monet and the pointilistic Seurat. Through methods and expression she is utilizing and commenting on the conditions of speed and elusiveness.

In 2011 Malbek moved back to the landscape and the light in West Jutland after a number of years in Copenhagen.

Christina Malbek graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2003. She has exhibited both nationally and internationally including Kim Light/ LightBox in Los Angeles, Transit Art Space in Stavanger, Norway, Göteborgs Konsthall in Sweden, and the Mexican National Museum Museo de San Carlos.

She is represented in several major international collections including;
Arken, Kunsten-Aalborg, Esbjerg Kunstmuseum, Ny Carlsberg Fonden, Nykredit Collection, Microsoft Collection (USA), Statoil Collection (N),Stavanger International Collection (N)
