Fan Letters performance

Fan Letters

05.10.2015 -

Fan Letters is touring Europe in October 2015, premiering new work based on choreographed flashlight instruments created by the artists. Fan Letters presents a unique approach to experimental performance, interactive video, and live electronic music. Their European tour follows a full spring of performances in New York City, at venues including Museum of the Moving Image, Flux Factory, Silent Barn, and the Film Society of Lincoln Center.

About Fan Letters:
Fan Letters is an audiovisual collaboration between musician Dylan Neely and video artist Alex Nathanson. Their work combines sound, video, computer programing, and handmade electronic instruments into playful and thought-provoking interactive multimedia performances. Shows oscillate between noise and chamber music, from experimental cinema to Saturday morning cartoons, and political negotiations to schoolyard games. Their work has been described as "that secret alchemical intersection between music performance, video games, good art, digital animation, multiple screens, and tech," and as "difficult to describe."

Based in NY, Fan Letters has played in squats, DIY spaces, museums, and concert halls throughout the US, Canada, and Europe. Notable 2015 performances occurred at the Museum of the Moving Image, Film Society of Lincoln Center, Silent Barn, and Flux Factory; Fan Letters has been presented by MATA Interval and Queens New Music Festival, and supported by the Foundation for Contemporary Arts.

Dylan Neely is a composer and improviser whose work includes electroacoustic violin performance, opera, sound installation, and various multimedia collaborations. His music has been played by groups including Quartetto Indaco, Mills Contemporary Performance Ensemble, Ensemble Móbile, The American Composers' Orchestra, and The Salome Chamber Orchestra. A Fulbright Fellow, Dylan received a B.A. from Bard College at Simon's Rock and M.F.A. from Mills College.

Alex Nathanson is a creator and organizer of images, sounds, and events. His practice is based in collaboration, intentional living, and a DIY ethos. Past collaborators have included Kid Millions, Carina Kaufman, Will Owen, and others. Currently, he is an artist in residence and the building manager at Flux Factory, in Queens, NY. This September he will be in St. Petersburg, Russia creating an absurd, pinata based game/ participatory art project for the Art Prospect Festival. www.alexnathanson.com
