06.12.2013 - 26.01.2014

PRESSEMEDDELELSE

Extract is GL STRAND's annual exhibition of young international art. The exhibition shows seven young artists from Europe who all have graduated from their master's program this year. Having studied respectively at Slade School of Fine Art in London, Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien, Funen Art Academy, Jutland Art Academy, and The Royal Danish Art Academy, the artists represent a selected view into the international art scene as it appears right now.

Extract aims to exhibit, celebrate and communicate younger artists internationally, presenting them in a comprehensive exhibition context in order to promote their work within a broader setting. All artists are selected on the basis of their graduation from the art academies, and all the works are exhibited in Denmark for the first time. The artists have not been chosen to fit an overall heading as regards content or thematic starting point. The exhibition shows a range of interests, formal investigations and thematic content. Storytelling and narrative experiments are the focus of several of the artists, but the sensory, formal and performative challenge to us as viewers is also a recurring feature.

Diversity both in expression and content is a characteristic of Extract. The artists work with a wide range of media and practices which include, amongst other things, studies of storytelling, the archive, multiculturalism, landscape painting and the light's ability to tell stories and fascinate us. However, as a common thread within these very different themes, is a general tendency, which transpires as an interest in the relationship between nature and culture.

The exhibition is accompanied by the Extract Prize of DKK 50.000, which will be awarded to one of the exhibiting artists. The prize will be selected by a jury which team up anew every year. This year the jury consists of Artist Michael Elmgreen, Director for Bonniers Konsthall in Stockholm, Sara Arrhenius, Chief Curator for BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, Laurence Sillars, and Director for GL STRAND, Helle Behrndt. The award is granted by The Obel Family Foundation. The winner of the Extract Prize will also be awarded with a solo exhibition at GL STRAND. Last year's winner was the Scottish artist Zoe Williams, who will be exhibiting in GL STRAND during the spring of 2014.

Participating artists: Åsa Frankenberg (S), Laurits Nymand Svendsen (DK), Niels Pugholm (DK), Birgitte Martinsen (DK), Lydia Nsiah (AU), Mollie Anna King (IR), Natalia Zaluska (PL).
