PRESSEMEDDELELSE

The exhibition Back Of presents new work by Danish artist Ditte Knus Tønnesen.

In the gallery's front space a group of timber constructions are chaotically assembled behind a back corner wall, marooned in a dim light. Large sheets of photographic prints hang loosely from the timber frames and allow views of both the front and back of the photograph.

The motive shows a man-made sheer rock wall, an overlapping steep chalk escarpment and a gateway from which an exit shall never be provided. The adjacent room is rigid and mimes an official museum installation with a glass framed b/w photographic print showing a stone staircase. Through the exhibition, several components play with elements prevalent to theatrical scenery and context.

By using the quality of the photographic signifier, Ditte Knus Tønnesen presents a body of work that explores the intersections between tactility, context and history.

The exhibition, Back Of is created in reference to the idea of the inner and other space. Knus Tønnesen's work investigates how individual understanding becomes a unique way of communication, showing a fascination with the idea that reality can often be seen as layers of understanding from diverse cultures, languages, religions and political views.

Ditte Knus Tønnesen graduated from The Glasgow School of Art (UK) and Kyoto Seika University (Japan) in 2008, with a first class BA (Hons) in Fine Art Photography. She currently lives and works in Denmark, where she is the co-founder and curator of the exhibition space GREEN IS GOLD Studio.
