A Potential Recording Device

Anders S. Solberg

25.05.2019 - 08.06.2019

Around 15 million years ago, an insect was caught in the resin of a tree. Over (the following) millions of years, the tree resin was exposed to heat and pressure. It became fossilised, turned into amber. The insect was preserved and the preservation is a recording. In photographic terms, it is a long exposure of an event crystallised into matter. This is a way of reconfiguring the terms of what the material aspects of a recording is, and by extension, a novel way of looking at matter. In this instance, an insect is deposited inside of amber, and this amber creates a barrier through which we perceive it. To gain access to the creature trapped within, the circumstances and setting of its entrapment must be decoded. In this way, the resin encapsulating it becomes part of the recording, and inseparable from it, just like the objects we surround ourselves with are also encased in an amber of sorts. They are engulfed in their own histories, their context, and the specific time we encounter them in. They store and record the intent of their makers
